PACWEST Spotlight: Sarah Hughes
She was named a CCAA All-Canadian in her final season
Capilano Blues veteran setter Sarah Hughes completed her five year PACWEST career with a bronze medal at the Provincial Championship at the end of February. She has been a leader on and off the court, moving from a power hitter position, to become one of the best setters in the PACWEST and CCAA.
She finished the 2016-2017 season with 116 total offence points, 56 kills, 27 aces, 209 digs and 33 digs. However it’s more than numbers and stats that Hughes brings to the floor. Her energy and enthusiasm fuels her teammates and bigger and better things.
Blues head coach Cal Wohlford will miss her next season, “She has been a leader for our program. From the start her first year when she had an injury that put her on the bench, she used that to learn and see what I was looking for from my players and when she rejoined us the next four years she used that for herself but also the team. She was a huge bond between the coaching staff and players which will be missed but she also set a standard for the players that she played with and the ones coming back. She is a Blues Athlete and I am very proud of her success.”
Her success on the court caught the eye of the PACWEST coaches, and she was voted in as a CCAA All-Canadian. Following the women’s National Championship awards banquet, Hughes talked with Ryan Watters about her honour and the next chapter of her life.
