Chargers back on track with win over the Avs
The College of the Rockies Avalanche were playing their third match in three nights. After coming off back to back loses with the Mariners, the Avs travelled down the Island Highway from Nanaimo to Victoria where they faced a well rested Chargers team.
The Chargers began their weekend series against the visiting COTR Avalanche with a straight set victory tonight at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. A slow start by the Chargers provided the Avs with the opportunity to take an early lead, however, the home team pushed their opponents to a see-saw battle in the late stages of the first set to edge out a 28-26 win.
"It was a night that provided a significant swing in play from the first set to the third." stated Coach Dahl. "We started the night playing catch up for the better part of the set, but pulled through after twenty. By the third set we seemed to be in full control and I suppose the spread in the score would support that.”
Camosun completed the come-back and cruised to victory with a solid 25-20 result in the second set and the delivery of a decisive third (25-9).
"Katie Fetting plays such an important role for us." continued Dahl "We moved her into yet another position tonight and a role that asked her to focus on stabilizing our play. She did a great job. The league knows her as an attacker with range and power. Our program has long known her to be an incredibly well rounded player and I feel that this has been on greater display this season. In addition to the leftside position we’ve had her set in matches, she can provide a spark as a libero, and she can line upon the opposite wing… she’s a tremendous player.”
"Tomorrow I anticipate a match up of two teams that are keen to end the first semester on a strong note. We have aspects of our game that we’d like to continue to improve"
Third-year outside hitter Michelle Zygmunt (Abbotsford) led the charge with 19 points (18 kills, 1 stuff block) and 8 digs. Second-year outside Megan Beckett (Reynolds) had 14 points (12 kills, 1 block, 1 ace) with 9 digs. Camosun advance to 8-3; COTR slides to 2-9
Both teams return to action bright an early tomorrow morning for an 11 am start for the last match of the semester.
