Blues continue hot streak with sweep of Avalanche
The CapU Blues hosted the College of the Rockies (COTR) Avalanche for a double-header this week, which saw the first-placed Blues pull off a pair of wins; Thursday night 3-1 (20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-7) and Friday night 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-16).
Leading the way for the Blues on Thursday night were Alexis Sebok (11 kills and 3 aces), Kira Sutcliffe (10 kills and 2 aces), Meghan Koven (8 kills and 2 aces) and Mika Chow (21 digs).
On Friday night, the Blues got down early, losing the first set 25-18. However, in the second set, a beautifully placed ball from fourth-year setter Sarah Hughes led way to a monster Kolby Richter kill giving the Blues momentum to overtake the Avalanche in the second set 25-23. The emotion and intensity was evident from both teams throughout the third set; however, the Blues were able to come out on top, 25-19 to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set. The Blues started off strong in the fourth set leading to a 25-16 set score and a 3-1 victory.
Blues head coach, Cal Wohlford said that both games this week were very similar in that the team started slow, “we made a lot of unforced errors and that gave all the energy to COTR. As the game wore on, we started playing a little bit better. Hughes in both matches did a very good job of spreading our offense around quite well. It’s a good sign when you have three players recording double-digit kills, which means your setter is doing a really good job mixing it up.”
Notable performances in Friday’s match include: Sebok, (16 kills and 2 aces), Sarah Hughes (8 aces), Koven (11 kills and 2 blocks), Sutcliffe (10 kills and 2 aces), and Chow (20 digs).
