Blues dominate Bearcats in Friday night victory
The CapU Blues hosted the visiting Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats in the first night of a double-header, with the Blues taking the match 3-0 bringing their record to 2-1 on the season.
The first set was dominated by the Blues 25-19. Although the Bearcats held a 13-12 set lead, the Blues were able to put together a run and take the second set 25-18. In the final set, CapU took an early lead of 10-3 and went on to win the third and match deciding set, 25-20.
Head coach, Cal Wohlford was pleased with some aspects of the game, but also stressed that there were frustrating moments throughout the match, "we do a lot of unforced errors and we do them in bunches and that gets the opposing team back in."
Wohlford believes the key for the team will be the ability to remain consistent set-to-set and match-to-match, "there are times when we are in the groove and we look very good, the problem is that we are not consistent with that."
Wohlford was impressed with fourth-year setter Sarah Hughes, "she did a pretty good job of mixing our offense around a little bit and trying to keep the tempo going."
Hughes was enthusiastic about the win, "we came out strong tonight, played well and did what Cal told us to do. There is stuff that we need to work on, but it was a good start for us."
Newcomer Abigail O'Neill is looking forward to the rest of the season and is "excited about seeing the different teams in the league and how [the Blues] do against them. I feel strongly about the caliber of our team."
Notable performances in tonight's match include: Kira Sutcliffe (13 kills), Alexis Sebok, (three ace serves and seven kills), Kolby Richter (nine kills, no errors) and Sarah Hughes (5 kills).
