Chargers volleyball squads sweep season openers
The Camosun Chargers volleyball teams swept their October 16-17 season openers with an action-packed home and away weekend against Island rivals, the VIU Mariners.
Slated by the conference as the women's volleyball match of the week, the contest between Camosun and VIU featured the top two teams of the past PACWEST season. The Chargers brazenly took down their opponents in straight sets at home and in the Hub City (Fri: 25-8, 27-25, 25-22; Sat: 25-21, 25-22, 25-18).
"It's still very early in the season but I suppose the weekend gave us the opportunity to square off against a PACWEST rival and served as a small measure of our present state," commented Chargers Women's Head Coach Chris Dahl. "Our measuring stick wasn't our opposition, it was our ability to learn and grow from our mistakes while embracing our successes. I was impressed with the feedback our athletes had post match each day... their comments suggested a commitment to the process at a time when it is easy to get wrapped up in wins and losses."
Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Fetting (Lethbridge, AB) had a phenomenal opening weekend contributing 16 points on both nights with 9 kills, 4 aces and 3 blocks on Friday and 13 kills, 2 aces and 1 block on Saturday.
"It's easy to notice Katie's offense," said Coach Dahl. "She has an incredible arm in our game and plays a physical brand of volleyball."
