The PACWEST champion Royals will meet the ACAC champion SAIT Trojans from Calgary in Thursday’s bronze medal quarterfinal at the women’s national soccer championship in PEI.
The Royals played through the falling snow on Wednesday and ran up against a very talented ACAA champion Hollard Hurricanes, who are also hosting the tournament. The Royals fell 4-1 in their quarterfinal with Pak Tung Tsang getting their lone goal.
On Thursday they meet the Trojans who were defeated 4-0 by the Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy in their opening game. During the regular season the Trojans finished 11-1, tied for first in the ACAC South Division. Then in the playoffs they beat NAIT out of Edmonton 3-1 in the quarters then took out the top ranked Concordia Thunder in the semi-final 2-1 before beating the Keyano Huskies 3-2 in penalties to win the Conference gold medal.
The Royals will need to defend well and be on the lookout for Meaghan Wiebe, the ACAC Player of the Year after she scored a Conference high 17 times in the regular season. Sainte-Foy did a nice job shutting her down on Wednesday.
The winner of this game moves onto a bronze medal semi-final on Friday.
