The PACWEST champion Douglas Royals open the CCAA women’s national championship tournament on Wednesday morning in Prince Edward Island when they meet the ACAA champion and host Holland Hurricanes.
The Royals, who finished second in the PACWEST standings beat the #3 seeded VIU Mariners and upset the #1 Capilano Blues two weeks ago to advance to the nationals. They will need to continue to ride that momentum when they face the Hurricanes who have had an incredible year.
During the regular season the Hurricanes finished 12-0 and scored a mind-blowing 49 goals while giving up only six. The Royals will need to be aware of where Emily LePine is on the pitch at all times, after she scored an eye-popping 27 goals during the season and can connect from anywhere.
For all their success in the regular season, they scored a 1-0 win in the ACAA championship game, beating King’s University from Halifax.
The Royals are back in the nationals for the first time since 2017 when they finished fifth and haven’t won a medal since 2016 when they finished with bronze. They have never won a national gold, as a matter of fact, the last time a PACWEST school won the women’s national championship banner was in 2008 captured by the Langara Falcons.
