A Long Time Coming
Sam Kell of the Douglas Royals finally tasted a national championship
After eight trips to a national championship and coming away without the ultimate prize, Sam Kell of the Douglas Royals women’s soccer team decided to try something different.
Following the end of the PACWEST soccer season Kell was approached by a friend to potentially join the newly formed Royals curling team. Kell had never curled before and first laughed off the suggestion. After giving it some thought she boarded a plane with her new teammates for the CCAA national championship in New Brunswick and was named the “lead.”
The Royals finished 4-3 during the round robin, and then swept the competition in the playoff rounds before beating the MacEwan Griffins in the national gold medal game. Kell had finally tasted a national title, a perfect way to end her PACWEST playing career.
