PACWEST Women's Soccer Recap
Week 3 of the PACWEST soccer season is in the books
SATURDAY
Capilano Blues 1
Douglas Royals 0
It was a back and forth defensive battle on Saturday as the Royals and Blues met for the first time since Week 1.
Saturday’s match-up was a completely different game from the last time they met, combining for six goals.
Due to the excellent defence the keepers had a relatively easy day. Blues’ netminder Darian Roussy was only required to make three saves to earn the shutout while her counterpart Alexa Gazzola allowed a goal and had two saves.
It wasn’t until the 83rd minute when Claire Ye scored her first of the season, a goal that turned out to be all the Blues would need to beat the defending PACWEST champion Royals.
These two teams will meet once again on Sunday.
VIU Mariners 0
Langara Falcons 0
The defence was stifling on Saturday in Nanaimo as the Mariners and Falcons didn’t generate much offence in a scoreless tie.
The Falcons’ keeper Sierra Grieco wasn’t required to make a save on the afternoon while the Mariners’ goalies Melanie Osborne made four.
Oddly enough this is the second final in as many games this season that the Mariners and Falcons ended in a scoreless tie. They finished 0-0 in Week 1.
They will face each other again on Sunday afternoon.
SUNDAY
Douglas Royals 1
Capilano Blues 0
For the second time in as many days the Royals and Blues played an excellent defensive game not allowing much offence on Sunday afternoon.
It wasn’t until the 61st minute when Royals’ forward Mikayla Hamilton tallied her PACWEST leading fourth goal.
After that the Royals defence went to work and keeper Alexa Gazzola made four saves to earn her second shutout of the season. Blues’ goalie Darian Roussy on the other side made three saves in a loss.
The Royals (3-2-1) will visit Langara (2-1-2) on Saturday while the Blues (1-2-2) will host the VIU Mariners (1-2-3).
Langara Falcons 2
VIU Mariners 1
The Falcons earned their second win of the season on the road in Nanaimo with a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.
After playing to a scoreless tie on Saturday the Falcons opened the scoring early as Kayleigh Beaubien scored her first of the season in the eighth minute.
However just 30 seconds later the Mariners rushed down the pitch and Kate Reynolds finished it off with her first of season to knot the game at one.
It stayed that way until just after halftime when the Falcons found some daylight and Beaubien tallied her second of the game in the 47th minute to give the Falcons a one goal advantage.
From there keeper Sierra Grieco made two saves in the second half leading the Falcons to the victory.
The Falcons (2-1-2) will host the first place Douglas Royals (3-2-1) on Saturday and the Mariners (1-2-3) will visit the Capilano Blues (1-2-2).
