SATURDAY
Douglas Royals 2
Capilano Blues 1
The women’s Game of the Week proved to be just that after an exciting game on Saturday.
The Royals opened the scoring very early in game when Sam Kell blasted a free kick into the box which bounced off a Blues player and into the back of the net in the sixth minute.
In the second half another ball that went off a Blues player and into their own net gave the Royals a 2-0 advantage in the 50th minute.
Then finally in the 80th minute the Blues scored on the correct net when Jamie Petersen got her shot past keeper Alexa Gazzola but it was too little too late.
The Royals win clinched first place in the PACWEST and the #1 seed heading into the championship tournament this weekend. The Blues grab the second seed.
VIU Mariners 2
Quest Kermodes 0
These two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half as Kermodes keeper Rikki Logan made four saves. Zoe Grace at the other end wasn’t tested.
In the second half the Mariners jumped on the board when Karen Battie scored in the 48th minute. The goal would turn out to be the game winner. That said Moira Brown added some insurance in the 79th minute to secure the win.
Grace made three saves in the shutout victory.
SUNDAY
VIU Mariners 2
Capilano Blues 0
Sunday’s game meant nothing in the standing s for Blues as they knew they had wrapped up second spot in the PACWEST standings. For the Mariners however they needed a victory and a little help to clinch third in the Conference.
After a scoreless tie in the first half, the Mariners got on the board in the 76th minute when Rachel Jones scored the eventual game winner. She then added some insurance in the 90th minute to secure the win.
Keepers Zoe Grace and Cassidy Chamberlin combined for the shutout victory.
The win gave the Mariners 17 points, tying them with Langara. However the Falcons won their head to head match up which then dropped the Mariners to the fourth seed for the upcoming PACWEST championships. They will face the Douglas Royals in the semi-final.
Langara Falcons 5
Quest Kermodes 0
The Falcons came out firing on Sunday blasting shot after shot at Rikki Logan the Kermodes’ keeper, but came up empty as Logan was equal to the test.
Then finally in the 51st minute of the second half Alessia Cuzetto scored what would hold up to be the eventual game winner, but in reality the Falcons were just getting started.
Four minutes later Giulia Repole scored her fourth of the season to give the Falcons a two goal advantage. Just a minute later Carly Dhanda tallied her first of the year. Repole got her second of the game and fifth of the season in the 62nd minute before Cuzetto also got her second of the game in the 65th minute to cap the scoring.
Keeper Sydney Bell wasn’t really tested and made one save to record the shutout.
The Falcons finish third in the PACWEST standings and will face the Capilano Blues in the championship tournament this coming weekend at Quest University. The Kermodes will miss the tournament finishing the year with five points.
