Falcons and Royals Clash
For the second time in 10 days the Falcons face the Royals in PACWEST women's soccer
Saturday afternoon on the PACWEST soccer pitch it will be a dandy when the Douglas Royals (4-2-1) face the Langara Falcons (1-1-5) with just five points separating them in the standings.
These two teams will play each other both Saturday and Sunday this Thanksgiving weekend. These match ups come just 10 days after the Falcons beat the Royals 1-0 in a make-up game. The Falcons scored in the 42nd minute, then let keeper Sydney Bell shine making 13 stops in the shutout victory.
Despite that loss the Royals are the top team in the PACWEST with 13 total points. Their offence has scored 20 goals and have won three of their last four games outscoring their opponents 9-3. Sam Kell is the PACWEST leading scorer with five goals in seven games while Mikayla Hamilton has chipped in with three goals.
Keeper Nicole Scott’s goals against average is 0.75 and will do her best to hold down the Falcons this weekend.
“We are looking to build on a positive performance on Saturday,” says Royals head coach Chris Laxton. “This weekend gives us another chance to learn and develop with the unique opportunity to having to adjust to the same team the very next day. It is an important weekend near the end of the season as we try to string some consistent performances together as we hunt for a playoff spot.”
The Falcons have been led by Giulia Repole who has three goals in seven games. Keeper Sydney Bell has stood on her head at times compiling a goals against average of 1.01.
Their lone win this season came in that 1-0 victory over the Royals last week. Before that win they had finished with five straight ties. They are coming off a 2-1 loss last weekend at the hands of the Quest Kermodes, a game they controlled in the second half with six shots on the net compared to the one from the visitors.
Falcons head coach Rae Pelat says “This weekend is going to be a grind, back to back games are always a challenge and that’s ramped up even more because Douglas is in first place. The experience on the Douglas side is very evident, and I'm sure they'll be looking for revenge. But the girls have put in a hard week of training and are fired up for the challenge.”
This weekend is an important one for both teams as there are just six points separating first place from fourth place in the PACWEST standings.
Saturday’s Game of the Week kicks off at 12:30pm, while Sunday’s match-up is set for 12:00pm.
