Both Saturday and Sunday produced excitement as we turned the calendar to October.
SATURDAY
Douglas Royals 4
Capilano Blues 1
The Royals were focussed on Saturday and got some payback from a loss earlier this season at the hands (or feet) of the Blues.
Sonali Dholliwar of the Royals opened the scoring with her first of the season in the 23rd minute. Just 13 minutes later Sneha Sandhu scored the game winner in the 36th minute, also her first of the season.
The Blues cut the lead in half after Claire Ye got her second of the year in the 38th minute making it a one goal game heading into the break.
The Royals however restored their two goal lead in the 50th minute when Martina Pettenon blasted the ball past Blues keeper Brittney Roussy. Then in the 70th minute Mikayla Hamilton tallied her third to secure the victory.
Nicole Scott stopped four shots on route to the win while Roussy was busy making seven saves.
These two rivals will play one more time before the PACWEST season is over.
VIU Mariners 4
Quest Kemodes 0
The Mariners were a buzz saw on Saturday not giving the Kermodes much breathing room directing 10 shots towards Rikki Logan in the first half alone.
Moira Brown took her play to a new level scoring the first and second goals of the game for the Mariners in the 10th and 30th minutes respectively.
In the second half the Mariners continued to press and Shea Battie found the back of the net in the 62nd minute for her first of the campaign. Then six minutes later Katie Rodgers tallied her first in the 68th minute to cap off the scoring.
Keeper Alex DeMille made two saves and collected her first shutout of the season.
SUNDAY
Quest Kermodes 2
Langara Falcons 1
A pair of goals in the first half helped lift the Kermodes to their first win of the season.
Sachi Swift opened the scoring in the sixth minute with her second goal of the season. Then in the 31st minute Swift scored again giving her club a two goal lead. This goal would stand as the game winner.
The Falcons did cut the lead in half in the 67th minute when Nicole Bell scored her second of the season, but that’s as close as they would come.
Keeper Rikki Logan made five saves in the victory while Simran Basra stopped three shots for the Falcons.
VIU Mariners 3
Capilano Blues 3
What a game! The Blues jumped out to a two goal lead in the first half after Marsha Chessire and Natalie Leclerc buried their opportunities in the 19th and 40th minutes.
However after the break the Mariners swung the momentum and saw two quick hits from Shea Battie in the 51st and 55th minutes tying the score. They were her second and third goals of the season.
Then in the 79th minute the Mariners took their first lead when Katie Rodgers scored her second of the season.
Just when the Mariners looked like they would hang on for the win when both teams entered injury time, Adrianna Babinski of the Blues knocked in a corner kick in the 94th minute to tie the game at three.
Blues’ keeper Brittney Roussy in particular was busy seeing 21 shots directed towards the goal. Not all found their mark and she finished making seven saves.
