Women's Soccer Game Of The Week

Women's Soccer Game Of The Week

The regular season concludes this weekend with just one point separating third and fourth place in the women’s standings.

Saturday afternoon the VIU Mariners host the Capilano Blues for the third time this season.  In the first meeting they played to a 1-1 tie on the Island, before the Blues won 2-0 a couple of weeks later at Cap.  The Blues (3-3-4) have had three different scorers in this series while the Chloe Gummer has scored the lone Mariners (3-2-5) goal.

Gummer sits third in PACWEST scoring and leads the Mariners, who have 20 total goals.  The Blues have the fewest goals among teams that have qualified for the Provincial tournament, sitting on 12 entering the final weekend. Taylor Einhorn leads her club with four.  Shaelie Bramley however is starting to heat up scoring in the Blues’ last two games.

The Mariners are coming off a lopsided 6-0 road victory last weekend at Langara with an impressive six different goal scorers.  The Blues on the other hand played a make-up game on Tuesday and tied Quest 1-1, Einhorn getting the lone marker.

Both teams have had solid goaltending this year.  The Blues have platooned Brittney Roussy and Nikki Gerbrandt.  Roussy has a 0.75 goals against average with a shutout and Gerbrandt has played the last two games and has allowed three goals but maintains a 1.56 goals against average.

The Mariners have stuck with Emily Rowbotham all season.  The fifth year veteran has three shutouts and a 1.60 goals against average and will be in net on Saturday afternoon with her PACWEST career winding down.

The winner of Saturday’s game will put themselves in the driver seat for third place.  For the Blues it’s their final game of the regular season, while the Mariners still host Quest on Sunday.  The Blues and Mariners will kick-off at 1:00pm on the Island.
