The PACWEST women's soccer game is a battle for first place as the top ranked Langara Falcons (2-0-2) visit the Capilano Blues (1-0-3).
Both teams could be considered surprises to open the season without a loss. Last season they both finished at the bottom of the standings and combined for just six wins.
This year the Falcons and Blues have opened by playing great on the backend, which leads to offensive chances. The Blues have allowed the fewest goals (3) while the Falcons have allowed the second fewest (5). The goalkeepers are a big reason for the success of both clubs. The Blues have platooned Brittney Roussy and Nikki Gerbrandt who have combined for a 0.91 goals against average and have posted a shutout.
The Falcons goalies have been just as effective. Sierra Grieco and Alexa Gazzola have a 1.34 goals against average and Gazzola pitched a shutout in the season opener at Douglas.
On the offensive side the Falcons are tied for the most goals with eight scored. Twins Amelia and Chelsea Brown lead the club with two goals each, Chelsea scoring both her goals last weekend in a 4-2 win over Quest.
The Blues on the other hand have scored the second fewest goals, but have found ways to win or tie. As a matter of fact their three ties have come in their last three games, including a 1-1 final against the Falcons on September 10th. Taylor Einhorn has two of the five Blues' goals.
Saturday's game should be high energy and fast paced with the top two teams in the Conference facing off for the second time in two weeks. Kick-off at Capilano is set for 1:00pm on Saturday.
