The PACWEST champion Royals begin their run to a national title on Wednesday afternoon when they face the Geants, the wildcard berth from the RSEQ.
The Royals are back in the CCAA national championship for the first time since 2017 when they finished fifth. They didn’t face a team from the RSEQ that season so are looking forward to this challenge and continuing their most recent success.
If the Royals can capture some of their magic from the PACWEST championship particularly on the defensive side they could see some success. The play of their “bigs” down low were instrumental in winning the Conference title led by Mackenzie Dalphond and Jettie McLaughlin who blocked and altered shots forcing teams to change their offensive attack. They will need to have success to lead their team along with strong guard play from Anja Tjernagel.
They face a Geants team that finished the regular season 12-6 and lost their Conference championship game 70-64. That 64 points was right on their season average for scoring with the defence holding teams to 56 points a game. Their primary weapon for the Royals to try and shut down is the play of Sophie-Anne Bouffard.
The winner of this game advances to the CCAA semi-final on Thursday.
