Harriette Mackenzie of the VIU Mariners has been named the female Athlete of the Year
The PACWEST is pleased to announce the female Athlete of the Year across all sports for the 2022-2023 season.
Harriette Mackenzie of the VIU Mariners women’s basketball team was a dominating player all season long. She averaged a double-double in her 17 games scoring just over 19 points and pulling down almost 15 rebounds each game. She was named a CCAA All-Canadian, a member of the PACWEST First Team All-Stars and the PACWEST Player of the Year.
“Harriette is not only talented but its the compete and intensity with which she plays the game that is most impressive,” says Tony Bryce, Mariners head coach. “She cleans the glass, alters and blocks shots and obviously can score in multiple ways. Down the stretch she was locked in and a huge part of our playoff success.”
She was definitely locked in during the PACWEST championship. In the Mariners two wins on route to the gold medal she averaged 18.5 points and 14 rebounds and was named Player of the Game in their semi-final win before being named the championship MVP.
She continued her hot play at the CCAA national championship in Ontario helping their Mariners to their first national crown in 22 years. She averaged another double-double of 19 points and 19 rebounds and was named the championship MVP.
Mackenzie becomes the first women’s basketball player to be named Athlete of the Year across all sports since Shayna Cameron of the Quest Kermodes following the 2014-2015 season. Mackenzie is the sixth straight athlete from VIU to win this award.
