Mike Teeter, Director of Athletics & Recreation at Columbia Bible College, is pleased to announce Jessica Funk has been selected as the College’s next head coach for women’s basketball. Funk will succeed Angela Booy and start immediately.
Funk is no stranger to CBC, having been a four-year student athlete on the women’s basketball team while earning her BA in Intercultural Studies. As a CBC Bearcat, Funk was recognized with both a CCAA National Scholar Award and the Bearcat Athletics President’s Award for the 2017-2018 season.
Despite her youth, Funk comes to her new role with a wealth of coaching experience. She discovered her love of the game growing up in Calgary, AB, which also saw her get her start as a coach, first as NBC Canada Master Teacher and then as a Calgary Basketball Academy Head Coach. Funk has enjoyed unique international opportunities to coach as well. One occurred during her yearlong intercultural studies internship in Uganda, where she coached the Watoto Secondary senior girls’ team. Another took her to Europe where she coached an NBC International Team as their Head Coach.
A former Bearcat teammate says, “Jessica created a welcoming environment that reminded everyone that they played an important role in the Bearcat family. . . Jessica also has a way of explaining basketball that makes sense to people in a way that most people cannot. Jessica has years of experience coaching and it is noticeable in the way she plays and explains.”
“We are excited to welcome Jessica on in this new capacity,” says Mike Teeter. “She has been a valuable member of our Athletics staff here over the past year. I know Jessica will do a terrific job with the young women that become a part of our women’s basketball program. She has a deep care for people, a great grasp of the game and a passion to grow and excel at whatever she does.”
