After six successful seasons, Capilano University Blues women’s basketball head coach Ramin Sadaghiani has decided to step away from coaching to pursue a new career opportunity with ICBC in Kelowna.
A long-time North Shore native, Sadaghiani helped foster athletic and academic success at CapU. In his first season in 2012-13, he coached the Blues to a regular season championship and a silver medal at the PACWEST Championships. Capilano won silver again in both 2015-16 and 2016-17 before finishing on top in 2017-18 – winning PACWEST gold and earning a trip to the CCAA Nationals.
Sadaghiani was voted PACWEST Coach of the Year in 2016-17 after leading the Blues to a 16-2 regular season record, with the 16 wins tying a Capilano women’s basketball single-season record. In 2018, he was also nominated for Coach of the Year at the North Shore Sports Awards. He finishes his Capilano career with an overall 82-38 regular season record.
“Ramin has been a bright light in our coaching staff,” said Milt Williams, CapU Manager of Athletics & Recreation. “He has recruited strong academic students who have performed well both in class and on the court. We are happy for Ramin and his new family as he pursues his new career and he will always be a part of our Blues family.”
Sadaghiani’s student-athletes also excelled in the classroom, as the women’s basketball won the Capilano Blues Team Academic Achievement Award every season but one. Overall, he coached five CCAA Academic All-Canadians and 18 CCAA National Scholars.
The Capilano women’s basketball record book was also rewritten by Sadaghiani’s recruits, as forward Carmelle M’Bikata finished with the most points and rebounds in school history, while point guard Ashley dela Cruz Yip has the most assists in both Capilano and PACWEST history.
Capilano University Athletics & Recreation would like to thank Sadaghiani for his hard work and dedication to the University and athletic program, and wishes him well in his future career endeavors.
