PACWEST Spike Night: Avalanche @ Cascades

Today’s PACWEST Spike Night on the men’s side of the net features the COTR Avalanche visiting the UFV Cascades at 3:00pm.

The Avalanche are coming off a split with the CBC Bearcats on Thursday and Friday as their tour through Abbotsford continues. Their Thursday four set victory at CBC showed their balanced offence as seven of their eight rostered players recorded a kill. Alex Avery and Zach James led the charge with seven kills each and Blake Thomson had 15 digs.

Today marks the seventh road match of the year for the Avalanche (4-6) who will conclude their first semester of play at UFV.

Head coach Cisco Farrero says, "Heading into the final weekend of matches this semester for us we are really looking to play our best volleyball of the term this weekend. We have had our moments of strong play in each of last weekend's matches at home versus VIU but in order to get better results we need more consistent play. UFV will be tough in their home gym and I expect long hard-fought matches both days.”

The Cascades (3-5) are considerably more rested then the Avalanche and haven’t played since last weekend when they split their matches with the Douglas Royals. They have won two of their last three and will look to continue their hot play on Saturday.

Today will be the eighth straight match on their home floor.

As a team they are averaging 9.6 kills a set and 11.1 digs. Nick Bruce leads the club with 88 kills and 107 total points. Ben Friesen has also been solid with 81 kills and 67 digs.

“We’re looking forward to another test against a new look COTR team,” says head coach Kyle Donen. “We are expecting a different style with some new additions and a new coach. For us we want to focus on having two solid performances this weekend.”

Last season when the Avalanche visited the Cascades they split the weekend each winning 3-1.

Today’s PACWEST Spike Night is set for 3:00pm following the women’s match-up.
