Friday night’s PACWEST Spike Night will feature two of the top teams going head to head for the first time this season.

The Capilano Blues (6-0) are undefeated and have dropped just one set thus far. Their offence has been solid and balanced led by Jacob Hopkins and his 66 kills, second highest in the PACWEST. Justin Yee has also been a factor with 41 kills and 12 aces. As a matter of fact the Blues have been very good from the service line as Yee, Hopkins, Zarley Zalusky and Simon Friesen have combined for 41 aces.

Head Coach Emmanuel Denguessi says “I think we will approach this game as any other game we have had so far. For us it means giving our best and working hard in all what we do; respecting our system and maximizing on our strength while managing areas of our game that need improvement. We have done exactly that so far and harvested the results we have. VIU is an opponent that makes you work for your points; so we will work hard in order to get the sets needed to win the matches.”

The Mariners on the other side of the net always seem to be at or near the top the PACWEST standings and early on this season it’s no different. They’ve won three straight, all on the road. Friday night will be their home opener.

Offensively Jeff Webb and Bradyon Brouwer have been the main pieces to the pie combining for 90 kills while their defence has been outstanding losing just two sets during this win streak.

Head Coach Abe Avender is pumped to finally play at home, “The 2017-18 VIU Mariners are excited to host the 6-0 Capilano Blues for our home opener. We look forward to a packed house of VIU Nation fans to cheer on our guys as we are very ready to battle the upstart Blues. We take a lot of pride in making the VIU gym one of the hardest venues in the country to win in for visiting teams.”

It will no doubt be noisy on Friday night when the Mariners welcome the Blues at 8:00pm for PACWEST Spike Night.
