Mariners 9th Straight Win
Saturday afternoon at the Sportsplex pitted the visiting Mariners against the host Blues in their 4th and final league match of the season. The Nov. 6th and 7th matches in Nanaimo ended in a weekend split. The Blues were hoping for the same today as they lost last nights' match 3-0.
Capilano came out strong in the opening set taking it 25-22. Unfortunately for the Blues, the Mariners momentun from last night finally kicked in as they won the next three sets to take match 3-1 and sweep the weekend.
"After a convincing win on Friday night, it was our goal to bring the same level of compete to Saturday's match. With some changes to the starting line up on Saturday, the cohesiveness and pressure from Capilano had us on our heels from the first point of the match." commented VIU head coach Avender. "They came out hungry to push us and we didn't respond well in the first set. We were able to regain our focus win a tight second set. We made a couple moves to bring in some veterans late in the second set to stabilize our side, which paid off as we were able to even the match at 1-1. From that point on, we were able to be more aggressive and find a higher level than in the first 2 sets and finish the match in 4."
