Mariners snap Royals home win streak
After a disappointing match last night, the Mariners were keen on reversing yesterday's result for today's match. The Royals remained undefeated at home and were looking to keep that streak alive.
"After the loss on Friday we had a great team meeting and discussed what it would take to make Saturday's result more favorable on our side. Our leaders addressed what we need to do to be successful" commented VIU Coach Abe Avender.
In a what was a battle all afternoon, the Mariners would come out on top of the scoreline. The 1st set was a close affair with the Mariners taking it 25-20 . VIU continued to attack taking the 2nd set 25-22. Douglas fought back winning the 3rd set while the Mariners won the 4th set to close out the match.
After the match, coach Avender stated, "The coaching staff developed a slight change in our game plan and the guys performed at the highest level we have played this season. We were able to manage our errors and put the Royals on their heals with some really good aggressive serving"
Mariners Zach Grigg (8 kills, 8 aces, 16 digs), Jesse Bazergui (22 kilss, 2 blocks, 2 aces, 18 digs) and Braydon Brouwer (17 kills, block, 12 digs) helped the Mariners get a big win against a good team. The Royals strongest contributors were Matt Santema (15 kills, 1 block, 1 ace), Nick lightfoot (11 kills, block, 4 digs) and Scott Devlin (7 kills, 4 blocks, 2 digs).
