Mariners Earn That Elusive First Win
The VIU Mariners entered the fourth week of the season having yet to win a match. In their four previous matches, VIU have battled hard for every set but have no results to show for their efforts. After losing two straight to the Cascades last weekend, the Mariners were hoping to change their fortunes this week vs the visiting Blues. The Blues on the other hand came into town sporting a .500 record after six matches.
On Friday night, the Mariners finally won their first match of the season in a gruelling five set battle which saw VIU down the Blues 29-27, 21-25, 25-12, 21-25, 15-8. Fifth year, Jesse Bazergui finished the night with 17 digs and 17 offensive points (12 kills, 3 blocks, 2 aces) while rookie Brady Adjelkovic had 12 digs and rookie Ariel Acosta had 17 offensive points (11 kills, 2 aces).
Head coach Abe Avender was happy with the win, “It was nice to get the 'monkey off our backs' and finally get our first win. We have been competing hard, but without any positive results to show for it, so it was excellent to battle hard to win a five set match at home. We have some excellent talent in our roster, but we need to figure out everyone's rolls on and off the court in order to gel and becoming a winning team.”
