Saturday afternoon the Mariners are back on the floor at the CCAA national championship when they face Toronto’s very potent Huskies in a bronze medal semi-final.
After falling 91-85 in overtime on Thursday in the quarterfinal, the Mariners claimed an important win on Friday, 115-91 over the St. Mary’s Lightning to advance to this contest with the Huskies. The Mariners found their stroke on Friday shooting 53% and connected on 15-three pointers in the victory. Tori Odom scored 24 while Akoi Yuot dropped in 23. For the Mariners to win, their big-three of Odom, Yuot and Richard Henderson need to stay out of foul trouble.
The Huskies are solid. They were 17-1 during the regular season but fell in the Ontario final 106-77 to the host St. Clair Saints. In this national championship tournament, they won their quarterfinal game in overtime over the Capilano Blues 120-113 but then lost on Friday in their semi-final 96-82 to the SAIT Trojans.
The winner of this game advances to Sunday’s bronze medal game while the loser’s season comes to a close.
