The PACWEST champion VIU Mariners advanced to the national semi-final with a dominating win on Wednesday
The PACWEST champion VIU Mariners took care of the host Mohawk Mountaineers to open the CCAA national championship on Wednesday 81-53.
They blasted out of the gate outscoring the home side 21-13 and never looked back. They shot 42.6% from the field and were equally as good from behind the three-point line connecting on 42% of their attempts. Ranika Guyton exploded for a game high 27 points and was named the Player of the Game while Harriette Mackenzie continued her dominating play on the post with 17 points and 21 rebounds.
On the defensive side they were suffocating holding the Mountaineers to 28% shoot from the field. Just one player reached the double-digit plateau.
With the win the Mariners are off to the semi-final to face the RSEQ champion Dawson Blues. They won a much tighter quarterfinal, downing the ACAC champion Red Deer Queens 68-51. Their defence was outstanding scoring 24 points off turnovers.
