In 2019 the Douglas Royals captured their second PACWEST title in three years with a 1-0 shutout of the VIU Mariners.
During the regular season the Royals finished in second place, three points back of the top seeded Mariners. The Royals combined for a 6-4-2 record overall, the Mariners meantime collected seven wins.
The Royals offence was led by Milan Gandesha and his five goals while Yianni Siafakas chipped in with four. Their keeper Felipe Domingos was fantastic with a 0.93 goals against average and a total of four shutouts.
As the PACWEST champs the Royals punched their ticket to the CCAA national championship tournament held in Durham Ontario. After a 3-1 loss in their opening game against the host Lords, the Royals came back with a pair of wins; a 4-3 victory over the Holland Hurricanes and a 2-1 win in penalty kicks over the Humber Hawks setting up a bronze medal tilt against the Saint-Lambert Cavaliers. Offence was tough to come by in the match and when the final buzzer sounded the Royals had lost 1-0.
Robby Toor would be entering his eighth year as the Royals head coach and 17th year with the program but like most of the world he has been working from home and has needed to find different ways to connect with his players during the pandemic. He talks about that with Ryan Watters, WATCH
