PACWEST Men's Soccer Recap
The final standings are set after the games this weekend
SATURDAY
Capilano Blues 6
Douglas Royals 2
In a preview of the PACWEST semi-final the Blues scored five times in the second half to defeat the Royals.
The Blues offence opened the scoring in the 28th minute putting all sorts of pressure on the Royals defence. They collected an impressive eight shots on net in the first half alone.
In the second half the Blues pressure wore on the Royals defence. Kaveer Brar scored three straight goals in a span of 15 minutes for the hat trick and to put the game out of reach. Keith Jackson added two more goals late in the game three minutes apart.
Keeper Hudson Nelles made two saves in the victory. One of the goals that got past him was a ball that went off his own player. Race Williams also scored for the Royals.
VIU Mariners 7
Quest Kermodes 1
The Mariners offence was buzzing the Kermodes net the majority of the game breaking down their defence. They scored four goals in the first half from four different goal scorers; Chris Merriman, Shun Takano, Joel Harry and Aly Adib all found the back of the net.
The second half proved much of the same as the Mariners tallied three more. Colin Knight scored his first of the season sandwiched in between a pair of goals recorded by Stephen Ewashko.
The Kermodes finally broke the shutout effort of David Turkstra when Josef Rebalkin found the back of the net in the 73rd minute. It was the first goal scored against the Mariners in four games.
SUNDAY
VIU Mariners 1
Capilano Blues 1
It was a heavyweight tilt on Sunday night to wrap up the PACWEST weekend as the top two teams played to a 1-1 tie.
The Mariners got on the board first when Shun Takano scored in the 14th minute, getting a ball past keeper Hudson Nelles.
There were not many chances for either side as both teams play excellent defence.
The Blues managed to tie the game right out of halftime in the 46th minute when Brian Cuba scored.
After that the chances again were slowed by the great defence.
With the tie, the Mariners finish the regular season with 29 points, three ahead of the Blues and clinch the #1 seed heading into the PACWEST championships this coming weekend.
Langara Falcons 1
Quest Kermodes 1
It was a game that meant nothing in the standings, but pride was on the line in the final game of the regular season.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the 10th minute as Stefan Jerkovic found the back of the net. Just 11 minutes later Aidan Haigh tied the game for the Kermodes.
After that the keepers stood tall. Kevin Monk of the Falcons made nine saves while Nick Luongo stopped seven shots.
The Kermodes will be the fourth seed on their home field this coming weekend at the PACWEST Championship and will face the VIU Mariners in the semi-final. Last season the Kermodes beat the Mariners in penalty kicks in the bronze medal game.
