The PACWEST Basketball Season Opens
All the teams saw action this past weekend on the men's side
The PACWEST basketball season has opened. Here's the Rewind from last weekend on the men's side.
THURSDAY
VIU Mariners 82
Camosun Chargers 81
What a game to open the new PACWEST season as the Island Rivalry game proved to be the best of the weekend.
The Chargers fought back scoring 30 points in the fourth quarter, led by Usama Zaid who drove and scored the game winner with a floater in the dying seconds. He finished with a game high 28 points and six rebounds. Both Tyus Barfoot and Jerod Dorby chipped in with 15 points each.
Matthew Gray had a strong game dropping in 25 and Matthew Hamilton came off the bench to score 17.
FRIDAY
Douglas Royals 97
Langara Falcons 89
The Royals set the tone early scoring 29 in the first quarter. Overall Noah DeRappard-Yuswack led his club with 26 points and 19 rebounds. Reese Morris also had a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 boards. Grant Campbell dropped in 15
The Falcons had a strong 28 point fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough. Ravi Basra led all scorers with 27 points. Both Grant Galbraith and Martin Bogajev each scored 13 in the losing cause.
Capilano Blues 87
Quest Kermodes 63
The Blues used everyone on Friday night as 11 players got on the scoresheet. Denver Sparks-Guest led all scorers with 26 points and 14 rebounds in his Blues debut. Brendan Bailey returned the line-up and scored 13 off the bench and Hassan Phills recorded 12.
The new look Kermodes had three players in double-digits. Chris McAlpine led the way with 13 points, Payton Tirrell had 11 and Ben Steinbrueck scored 10.
VIU Mariners 106
CBC Bearcats 61
It was all Mariners in this one as 11 different players hit the scoresheet. Usama Zaid dropped in a game high 34 points on 13 of 18 shooting and scored six-three pointers. Bryson Cox was outstanding with 14 points as was Brett Christensen off the bench also with 14.
The Bearcats had three players hit double-digits against the defending champs. Michael Olive scored 17 and hit five-three pointers, Tim Dick had 13 and Ty Cleland dropped in 11.
SATURDAY
Langara Falcons 99
Capilano Blues 84
The Falcons saved the best for last, exploding for 32 points in the final quarter to secure the road win. Martin Bogajev came off the bench for a game high 22 points against his former team. Ravi Basra was solid as well with 21 points hitting three from downtown. Grant Galbraith had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
The Blues dropped their first of the season led by Denver Sparks-Guest who had 21 and 12 rebounds while Hassan Phills scored 18 and had 12 boards. Last season’s Rookie of the Year Wowie Untalan hit three from downtown and chipped in with 13 points.

The Royals showed a balanced attack with 10 different players hitting the scoresheet. Josiah Mastandrea led all scorers with 18 points, including six-three pointers coming off the bench and Grant Campbell tallied 17. Noah DeRappard-Yuswack recorded his second double-double in as many nights with 12 points and 13 rebounds against his former team.
Every player on the Kermodes roster hit the scoresheet. Payton Tirrell led the way with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Chris McAlpine scored 11 and Ben Steinrueck dropped in 10.
Camosun Chargers 99
CBC Bearcats 71
The Chargers used a pair of 29 point quarters and 11-three pointers to win their home opener. Dallas Hancox led the “charge” with 22 points. Jake Wilmont dropped in 14 while Isaiah Romanow had 13 as both came off the bench.
The Bearcats on the other hand saw a huge game high from Ty Cleland who scored 28 points and was a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. Levi Joose chipped in with 15.
