Royals Will Play For Gold
The Douglas Royals punched their ticket to the CCAA gold medal game beating the defending champs
The Douglas Royals will play for CCAA gold after a massive 93-87 victory in front of the hometown Montmorency crowd in Quebec beating the defending champs.
A 31-point third quarter paved the way as they shot 59% from the field in the frame and 62% from downtown. Kameron Johnson caught fire and dropped a game high 33 points and was named the player of the game. Reese Morris was solid in the post with 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Rookie Josiah Mastandrea came off the bench and promptly nailed four-three pointers and finished with 12 points.
Defensively they forced 19 turnovers and had 12 steals. They also totaled 28 defensive rebounds not allowing many second chance opportunities.
The Royals will now face the Seneca Sting, the Ontario Conference champions, who finished 19-1 and won their first title in 30 years. They have played in a pair of tight games this tournament as well beating the ACAC’s Lakeland Rustlers 77-69 and in the quarters and the ACAA champion Holland Hurricanes 90-86 in the semis.
Tip-off is set for 5:00pm PST on Saturday and the Royals are trying to become the first PACWEST team to win a CCAA gold medal since the Langara Falcons in 2014. The Royals last won this championship in 2008 oddly enough also in Quebec.
