Usama Zaid of the Vancouver Island University Mariners has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.
He received the award at the 2017 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship banquet, hosted by Holland College in Charlottetown, PEI.
Zaid led the Mariners to a 16-2 record and first-place finish in the PACWEST. He ranked first in the conference with 28.3 points per game, which placed him second overall in the CCAA.
He smashed VIU’s single-season record of 23 points per game but also ranked third in PACWEST with 9.12 rebounds per game and sixth in assists.
“We have never had a player come near the statistical production as Usama has achieved,” said Matt Kuzminski, Head Coach of the Mariners. “This production has contributed a lot to our team success but stats aside, Usama has made a great effort of buying into being a great teammate.”
Zaid, a third-year forward, is always happy to see his teammates succeed and has brought a great effort and enthusiasm to practice.
A transfer from the United States, Zaid arrived early last summer to work on all the Mariners youth summer camps. He has also volunteered to coach at Mini Mariners sessions throughout the season.
The Mariners captured their third straight PACWEST crown and head into the CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship as the No. 3 seed.
CCAA Player of the Year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
Other nominees for the Player of the Year award were Ian Tevis of the Red Deer Kings (ACAC), Rayvon Higdon of the Redeemer Royals (OCAA), Alix Lochard of the Nomades de Montmorency (RSEQ) and Thomarcus Nix of the Crandall Chargers (ACAA).
