In a battle of the unbeaten, the CapU Blues played host to the defending PACWEST champions, VIU Mariners on Saturday afternoon at the Sportsplex in North Vancouver.
After a very physical first half, the Mariners held a narrow advantage 45-44 going into the break. VIU’s Josh Ross (3rd year) caught fire from the 3-point line (4-5) to total 18 points and Bryson Cox (3rd year) contributed 12 points in the first half for the Mariners. Second-year’s Brendan Bailey (11 points, 4 assists) and Graddy Zubaidi (10 points, 3 rebounds) led the way for the Blues.
The Mariners outscored the Blues in the second half, (45-30) leading to a 90-74 win over the Blues. VIU finished with five players in double figures; Ross (22 points, 11 rebounds), Cox (15 points), Jason Fortin (15 points, 11 rebounds), John Thompson (14 points) and Curtis Wilson (13 points, 10 rebounds). The Blues had four players in double figures on the night, Bailey (15 points), Parm Bains (13 points), Martin Bogajev (12 points) and Zubaidi (10 points).
