The PACWEST Golf Championship Tees-Off
On Friday morning PACWEST golfers will have their eye on PACWEST gold and a berth in the CCAA Nationals
The 2018 PACWEST Championship Golf tournament is set to go beginning on Friday morning at the Nanaimo Golf Club on Vancouver Island. Each player will golf three rounds with the winners moving onto the CCAA Championship next weekend in Medicine Hat.
On the women's side six golfers are eligible to compete, three from the UBC Okanagan Heat and the host VIU Mariners. Samantha Copeland of the Heat is no doubt one of the favourites to win after winning two of the first three tournaments of the season despite being a rookie.
This will be the first time since 2012 that a golfer not from the UFV Cascades will be crowned the champion.
On the men's side six schools will be represented with the Cascades the favourite to win. Through the first three tournaments as a team they hold a 48 stroke lead over the Heat.
Individually the Mariners’ Wyatt Brook was just named the Player of the Year as he tops the PACWEST leaderboard through the first three tournaments. His cumulative score of 423 is four strokes better than the defending CCAA gold medalist Daniel Campbell of the Cascades. Looking at the leaderboard three of the top four cumulative scores belong to the Cascades showing their team effort.
Even though Brook sits atop the leaderboard, never count out Campbell and Jacob Vanderpas of the Langara Falcons. He currently sits 10 strokes back of the lead and was the Player of the Year in 2016, while Campbell won the award last year.
It should be an exciting weekend for golf if the weather cooperates. Friday is calling for a 60% chance of showers and a high of 12. Saturday will be the best day of the weekend with sunshine and a high of 14, and then Sunday the clouds return with a 70% of showers and a high of 13.
