PACWEST Male Athlete of the Year
Daniel Campbell of the UFV Cascades
The PACWEST congratulates Daniel Campbell of the UFV Cascades on being named the Male Athlete of the Year.
He was a rookie to the PACWEST tour this past season, but certainly did not play like one. In his first tournament he finished tied for third with a two-round total of 141, just five strokes back of the leader. He shot a tournament low 66 in his second round at the Okanagan Golf Club.
In the second tournament hosted by VIU at Morningstar Golf Club, Campbell continued his hot shooting. In his first round he shot a course low 66, and then had a 69 on Day 2 and won his first PACWEST tournament.
The following weekend at Highland Pacific Golf Club in Victoria, Campbell again battled for the top of the leaderboard. He finished with a two-round total of 143 and was tied for sixth place.
In the final tournament of the season, hosted by his Cascades at Ledgeview Golf Club he shot a two-round total of 138, winning tournament by just one stroke over teammate Ben Whiton. Campbell’s 68 on the first day was the only score sub 70 on the first day.
With the win he captured the PACWEST gold medal with a cumulative score of 557, nine strokes better than the silver medalist; Whiton (566).
With the PACWEST title under his belt he set his eyes on the CCAA national championship in Ontario. After an opening round of 71 he claimed the lead and never relinquished it finishing with a four round total of 288 and captured the national gold medal. He was the first PACWST golfer to win the national title since Jared Callbeck in 2014 from the Camosun Chargers.
“From an individual standpoint, Daniel’s season was maybe the most dominant performance I’ve seen in my 14 years of coaching,” says head coach Chris Bertram. “And the impact it had on our team’s National Championship was profound. You just can’t overstate the effect it has throughout the roster when the other players know their number one guy is going to post a great score each and every day.”
Campbell becomes the first golfer to win the PACWEST Male Athlete of the Year award.
