The PACWEST finished the CCAA basketball championship quarterfinals with a split on Thursday.
On the men’s side the VIU Mariners announced to the rest of the field that they will be a force in this tournament following a convincing 98-82 victory over the George Brown Huskies.
Usama Zaid set the pace with an impressive 42 point performance, adding 12 rebounds and a steal and was named Player of the Game. Jalen Schlegel helped the Mariners outscore the Huskies 60-26 in the paint dropping 14 while Bryson Cox added 11. In all the Mariners offence shot 50.6% from the field and held the OCAA wildcard team to 35% shooting.
Each player on the Mariners championship roster scored at least one basket.
The PACWEST champs now move onto to face the RSEQ champion Nomades de Montmorency who squeaked by the Lethbridge Kodiaks 86-84. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm PST on Friday.
On the women’s side the PACWEST champion Douglas College Royals didn’t fare as well as the Mariners. In their first CCAA national championship game in 24 years, they fell 99-44 for the ACAC champion Lethbridge Kodiaks who led from wire to wire.
The Royals had difficulties controlling the ball, committing 32 turnovers and allowing the Kodiaks to shoot 46% from the field.
Offensively they were led by Sarah Jorgenson who scored 13 points and Player of the Game Rachel Beauchamp dropped in nine points and added four rebounds
On Friday the Royals move to the bronze medal side of the bracket and will face the MSVU Mystics at 12:00pm PST. The Mystics also had their struggles falling to the Nomades de Montmorency 75-58.
