Each PACWEST team in 2017 will look to leaders on the pitch; athletes that can either score goals or command his/her teammates. These are PACWEST “Impact” athletes.
At Capilano, the Blues men’s team has been stacked with impact players as evident in their back to back PACWEST championship titles. However one player is a step above.
Keith Jackson was simply outstanding for the Blues in 2016, despite not playing the year before. Last year he scored 11 times during the regular season and then four goals in the PACWEST provincial championship tournament. His 11 goals topped the PACWEST leaderboard.
During the 2014 campaign Jackson led the Blues in scoring with eight markers and was second in PACWEST scoring.
If the Blues are hoping to three-peat, they will need a healthy Jackson to be that constant threat to opposing defences.
On the Blues women’s side Dominika Paige enters her second season and is expected to make an impact.
Last year the South Surrey native played significant minutes as a rookie playing in all 12 games and both playoff contests. She helped the Blues to a PACWEST provincial bronze medal a year ago.
She didn’t score a goal as a midfielder, but alertly moved the ball forward and played quickly under pressure. She also showed excellent passing and outstanding field vision, helping the offence move into attack mode.
As the Blues hope to build off their bronze medal from last season, they will rely on Paige a lot more in 2017.
The Blues open the PACWEST soccer season on Wednesday September 6 with a visit to Quest University in Squamish.
