The PACWEST is pleased to welcome the Okanagan College Coyotes effective immediately.
The Coyotes become the 10th member institution in the Conference and will begin competition this coming fall in the sport of basketball. They become the first new member since the 2008-2009 season when Quest University joined.
“We are excited to be bringing a new member on board with the PACWEST,” says PACWEST President Jake McCallum. “There is a strong basketball presence in Kelowna and we are looking forward to Okanagan College adding to the competitive nature of our Conference”.
Last season the Coyotes basketball program played 20 exhibition games in preparation for their bid to join the PACWEST in 2018/2019. Of those 20 games, 13 of which were against current schools in the PACWEST with each game being extremely competitive.
Okanagan College shares in the excitement of joining the PACWEST as Jenn Naiman the coordinator for athletics, recreation and student life says, “This is a very exciting time for Okanagan College and our community. Varsity athletics plays an integral role in the development of our student athletes and provides opportunity and learning beyond the classroom. Athletics is also a building block of promoting school spirit, pride, and a sense of belonging. We are thrilled to be part of the PACWEST Conference and look forward to developing our relationship with all of the institutions, coaches, and teams that are involved.”
The Coyotes will play their home games at two different schools in the Okanagan. Their primary home will be Immaculata high school in Kelowna, which also has a rich history of competitive basketball in the city. Their secondary home will be Penticton high school giving the Coyotes a greater reach and building a stronger brand.
They will begin play in November when the PACWEST opens up play and will face the Capilano Blues, Douglas Royals, VIU Mariners, CBC Bearcats, Langara Falcons and Camosun Chargers over the course of the new season.
