More PACWEST National Medals

A pair of PACWEST schools score a CCAA national medal at the curling championships on Wednesday.

The Douglas Royals men’s team ran the table at the CCAA National Curling Championship and took home gold winning 7-3 in nine ends on Wednesday beating the Fanshawe Falcons.

They would finish the round robin 7-0 dismantling the 3-4 Sault College Cougars in the final draw. The Royals dominated the Cougars beating them 11-3 behind the terrific shooting of Third Sterling Middleton who curled at 84%.

In the semi-final game the Royals continued their hot shooting and disposed of the University of Alberta-Augustana in the semis 4-1 behind a strong team effort of 80% curled by the foursome. The win would set up their battle with the Falcons for national gold.

The Royals are led by skip Daniel Wenzek, Third Sterling Middleton, Second Nicholas Umbach and Lead Brayden Carpenter.

On the women’s side the Camosun Chargers opened the tournament at 0-2, before storming back with five straight wins setting the table for a semi-final with the NAIT Ooks from Edmonton.

In a back and forth match up with the Ooks the Chargers stole two in the final end and won 6-3 punching their ticket to the gold medal game against the Fanshawe Falcons. Skip Taylor Reese-Hansen curled an impressive 79%.

In that final the Chargers and Falcons battled in extra ends before the Falcons claimed a 5-4 victory.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the Chargers run was the fact they played with just three players due to a foot injury to Third Jordan Koster before the tournament.

The Chargers team was made up of Skip Taylor Reese-Hansen, Third Jordan Koster, Second Mariah Coulombe and Lead Sydney Brilz.
