Women’s PACWEST gold will be decided on Saturday evening when the Mariners and Blues square off after a pair of exciting semi-final victories.
The Mariners are no stranger to this match, making their 10th straight appearance playing for the Conference gold medal. In the previous nine matches they have won five times. This stretch actually began when they faced the Blues in the 2014 title match and won. They also beat the Blues in this match in 2006, 2004 and 2003.
It’s been a minute since the Blues won gold, scrolling all the way back to 1986 when they beat Cariboo College. They advanced to the CCAA national championship that season and finished sixth.
During the regular season the Mariners dominated the Blues winning all four meetings, three of them courtesy of a sweep. As a matter of fact, they just saw each other February 9-10 at VIU, and the Mariners collected two lopsided wins.
On Friday the Mariners were pushed to the limit but showed their resiliency beating the Chargers in five thrilling sets that saw several momentum shifts. The Blues on the other hand upset the Royals in four sets in front of a very pro-Royals crowd.
Both teams will represent the PACWEST at the CCAA nationals in two weeks. The winner will go as the Conference champions, while the other team will be a wildcard and arguably have a tougher schedule, so plenty is on the line.
