Chargers Sweep
The Camosun Chargers sweep the Blues and; will play for PACWEST gold
The Camosun Chargers advance to their second PACWEST provincial gold medal match in school history tomorrow afternoon after defeating the Capilano University Blues 3-0 in the semi-final.
PACWEST first-team all-star Mika Yamada finished with 17 kills and 10 digs to lead the Chargers, while player of the match; fourth year outside hitter Sydney Svicenec racked up 10 kills and nine digs.
The Chargers started off the game taking a very back and forth the first two sets 25-20 and 26-24 respectively.
Three clutch hits from Yamada combined with an ace from 3rd-year middle blocker Grace Kazanowski helped secure the win in the third, in spite of a 24-21 Blues lead. The Chargers rattled off a 6-1 run late in the set that locked the victory.
Blues second year setter Kelsey Towers’ 30 assists helped her claim the Blues Player of the game. Meghan Koven was a big part of their offensive punch with 13 kills.
The Chargers will now advance to Saturday afternoon’s gold medal matchup and will face either the VIU Mariners or the UFV Cascades, while the Blues will compete for the bronze medal. Not only that, but the Chargers have also punched their ticket to the CCAA national championship tournament as the PACWEST has two representatives.
The last time the Chargers played in the PACWEST provincial gold medal match was in 2014-15, where the Mariners came back from a two set deficit and won the gold medal.
