The Blues punch their tickets to the semis with a three set sweep
The Capilano University Blues advance to the PACWEST semi-finals against the second seeded VIU Mariners tomorrow afternoon after defeating the University of Fraser Valley Cascades 3-1 Thursday Afternoon.
Capilano outside hitters, including PACWEST player of the match Jacob Hopkins and PACWEST first team all-star Rafael Hilario finished with 10 and nine kills respectively.
The match started off with both teams battling it out back and forth until almost the midway point of the first set where a Capilano 6-1 run helped put the Blues ahead to take the set 25-21.
The Blues momentum continued, although the Cascades went on a 16-11 run midway through the second set, the Blues 14-5 lead to start the match ended up being a gap too wide for UFV to close as Capilano took the set 25-21.
Capilano replicated the start of the prior set in the third as they once again led 14-5 to start the game, except this time the Cascades couldn’t get on a significant run of their own as Capilano outscored UFV 11-5 to secure their spot in the semi-final.
UFV rookie outside hitter Caleb Kastelein was named the UFV player of the match, racking up 10 kills throughout the match.
The Mariners heads into this match having gotten the better of the Blues in the regular season, taking the season series 3-1.
