The Capilano Blues punched their ticket to the PACWEST women’s volleyball semifinals, earning a four-set triumph over the Columbia Bible College Bearcats on Thursday afternoon.
In the opening match of the PACWEST championships at the Envision Financial Athletic Centre, the No. 4-seeded Blues prevailed by scores of 25-20, 27-29, 25-14 and 27-25. They’ll face the No. 1 Douglas Royals in the semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m.
After the teams split the first two sets, the Blues took control of the match with a decisive 25-14 triumph in the third. They continued their momentum in the fourth, leading by scores of 22-18 and 24-21, but the Bearcats came roaring back and fended off three straight match points to tie it up 24-24. Capilano, though, took three of the next four points to close out the victory.
Outside Tyneille Neufeld (14 kills) and Isabella Lima (13 kills) paced the Blues’ offence, and Lima added 10 digs en route to player of the game honours. Middle Courtney Becker chipped in with a team-high four blocks along with three kills, and libero Tracy Ewashkiw racked up 28 digs.
Bearcats senior left side Jodi Enns had an incredible performance, hammering down 24 kills to go with 10 digs. Cheyenne Heidebrecht (nine kills) and Jaymie Kwiatkowski (seven kills) also chipped in offensively, libero Julia Weiss notched 19 digs, and setter Alexa Eger had four blocks.
