A Chargers Three-Peat
The Camosun Chargers are PACWEST champs for the third straight season
They say things are sweeter in three’s. The Camosun Chargers can attest to that winning their third straight PACWEST title after a four set win over the top ranked VIU Mariners on Saturday night at the PACWEST championship tournament.
The gold medal match didn’t start in the Chargers favour however as the Mariners dominated with some outstanding plays winning the opening set 25-17.
The second set was extremely tight going back and forth before the Chargers managed to take advantage and tie the match with a 26-24 set win.
The tight play continued in the third as both teams traded points. However the Chargers again took the lead late and held on for a 28-26 victory which really took the wind out of the Mariners sails.
In the fourth the defending champs were just simply too much, clinching gold with a 25-16 victory and handing the Mariners their first home court loss all season.
Rookie Matthew Bowers was named the Player of the Match.
This is the first PACWEST three-peat since the Douglas College Royals did it from 1996-1998.
Despite the outcome both teams will head to the CCAA Nationals in London Ontario in a week and a half. The Chargers are the PACWEST representative, while the Mariners enter as a wildcard.
Following the gold medal match the PACWEST announced the tournament All-Stars and MVP.
