The first women’s semi-final on Friday did not disappoint on the excitement level as the second seeded Douglas College Royals snuck by the third seeded Capilano Blues in five sets and punched their ticket to the gold medal match on Saturday.
After the Royals won the first set 25-18, the Blues took control of the next two sets winning 25-18 and 25-23. It appeared the Royals would lose their seventh straight playoff match.
However the Royals showed tremendous poise and evened the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth set, setting up a sudden death fifth set.
Both teams went back and forth until the Royals snapped their six match playoff losing streak with a 16-14 victory.
First Team All-Star Juliana Penner collected a match high 29 kills while PACWEST blocks leader Georgia Hurry stuffed nine kill attempts. Setter Jane Kepler was named the Player of the Match.
The Blues were led by All-Star Tyneille Neufeld and her 16 kills.
The Royals will play for PACWEST gold and a berth in the CCAA National championship on Saturday night at 6:00pm against either the VIU Mariners or COTR Avalanche.
