The final match of Day 1 at the 2017 PACWEST volleyball championships produced the first upset as the #4 COTR Avalanche faced the #5 ranked Douglas College Royals.
The match was a back and forth affair as the Avalanche struck first winning 25-20, before the Royals turned around responding with a 25-17 second set victory.
In the third the Avalanche kept the theme alive winning 25-22, but were not able to finish off the Royals after the fifth seed tied the match again with a 25-19 win, setting up the second fifth set of the day.
In another extremely tight match, the Royals broke the back and forth theme and pulled off the upset win with a 15-12 victory as Justin Faester was named the Player of the Match.
The Royals now move on to the semi-finals and will face the top seeded VIU Mariners on Friday night at 8:00pm.
