For the second straight season the Quest Kermodes defeat the VIU Mariners on the strength of the penalty kick, but this time it propels them into the gold medal game.

The Mariners opened the scoring at the seven minute mark as Jordan DeGraaf got his first of the post season. The Kermodes then tied it just before the break when Ahmed Kamal scored.

In a back and forth game the Kermodes then took their first lead in the 55th minute as Kamal scored his second of the game.

The lead was short lived however as Jeff Travis tied the game at two in the 61st minute.

Kermodes keeper Sam MacDonald was solid in between the pipes make some highlight reel saves and forced penalty kicks with the top seeded Mariners.  He was also named the Player of the Game.

After no goals in the first round of the penalty kicks, round two produced two goals as Zach Roberts-Winters and Stephen Ewashko each scored to keep the game tied.

The third round again didn’t produce a goal.

The Kermodes took the lead in the fourth round when Vikram Puri scored putting pressure on Mariners shooter Shun Takano who scored to extend the game.

In round five the Kermodes again got on the board when Yassin Nayel put the ball behind Mariners keeper David Turkstra.

It was then up to Chris Marriman to keep the game going, however when his shot missed the Kermodes punched their ticket to tomorrow’s gold medal game against Douglas while the Mariners will play Capilano for bronze.

The winner of tomorrow’s game will not only win PACWEST gold but a berth in the 2017 CCAA Nationals as well.
