New Women's Champion
For the first time since 2012 a UFV Cascade will not be crowned champion
A changing of the guard will take place on the women’s side of the PACWEST golf championship. This year will be the first time a golfer from the University of the Fraser Valley will not be crowned champion since 2012.
With only two schools represented in the women’s field; the UBC Okanagan Heat and VIU Mariners will make their mark this weekend. A total of six golfers will make up the field, three from each school.
It been a reign of five consecutive seasons in which a Cascade has won PACWEST gold. The last non-Cascade golfer to win was Kate Wier of the Douglas Royals in 2012. The last Heat golfer to win was Jennifer Woods in 2010, while the Mariners have never had a women’s gold medalist.
Entering the PACWEST championship a pair of Heat golfers will no doubt be considered the favourites. Samantha Copeland has won two of three PACWEST tournaments this season, while teammate Rebecca Reitsma won last weekend. Both are rookies.
Though the three Mariner golfers have not won a tournament yet this season, they will have home course advantage with the PACWEST championship hosted at the Nanaimo Golf Club.
Regardless of which school wins the gold this weekend it is a long time coming and will be well deserved.
