In a weekend of upsets, the top two teams in the PACWEST during the regular season meet for the bronze medal on Saturday afternoon.
The Mariners were the top team heading into the playoffs but ran into a very physical Douglas Royals team on Friday and lost their semifinal showdown 62-55. It will be a quick turnaround for the Mariners who will look to win their final game of the season and head back to Nanaimo with a medal around their neck.
The last time they played for bronze was the 2018-2019 season and fell to the Royals 77-67. They won bronze the previous season.
On the other side the Blues were upset by the Okanagan Coyotes on Friday afternoon 75-69 and have had a longer time to regroup and prepare for their final game. The last time they played for bronze was in 2022 and fell to the Royals. Their last victory in this game was in 2012.
During the regular season these two schools met four times and split the seasonal series. The Mariners winning both games at VIU in October before the Blues won at home in January.
This game will also feature a pair of players that have spent their entire five years of eligibility in the PACWEST. Chloe Scaber of the Mariners and Kirsten Abo of the Blues will see the court for the final time as both athletes will graduate this year. It will no doubt be a very emotional game for both teams playing for their “super senior.”
