Royals Knock Off Champs
The Douglas Royals advance to the semi-final with a quarterfinal victory over the Okanagan Coyotes
There will be a new PACWEST champion on the women’s side after the Douglas Royals punched their ticket to the semi-finals with a thrilling 70-65 quarterfinal victory over the defending champion Okanagan Coyotes.
The Royals stepped up their defence in the second half and clamped down on the outside shooting of the Coyotes. They created 23 turnovers and made 15 steals in the win holding them to 27% shooting. On the offensive side the Royals shot 36% and were led by Player of the Game Carman Hiebert and Laini Glover in the second half. Hiebert was dominating with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Glover had a game high 18 points. Karalee Antonie was also a factor with quick hands creating a couple of steals and finished with 12 points.
In the setback the Coyotes were led by Player of the Game Ali Martineau who finished with 16 points and veteran Soleil Wilding who also had 16. Elizabeth Henne came alive in the second half finishing with an incredible 18 rebounds to complement her nine points.
With the win the Royals advance to the semi-final on Friday and will meet the Capilano Blues, while the Coyotes have had their season come to a close.
