An unbelievable third quarter from the Falcons erased a Douglas lead as the 6-12 Langara upset the hosting 10-8 Royals to move into Friday’s PACWEST Women’s Basketball Championship semifinal.
The first two quarters of the game showcased some incredible basketball as the two teams fought for the upper hand. Neither team quite managed to show any advantage over the other in the opening half, which would have ended in a 32-32 tie if not for back-to-back threes from Sydney Fraess in the final minute of the second quarter.
Breanne Homeniuk, who came off the bench for 27 minutes in a Player of the Game performance, scored 12 of her team-high 20 points in the third quarter as the Falcons came out firing to start the second half. The Falcons nearly doubled up the hosts in the quarter, putting up 29 points to the Royals’ 16 as they ended the third with a 61-54 lead.
Douglas came close to coming back in the final quarter, making it a one-possession game on two occasions, but were unable to sink a would-be game-tying shot, and hopes of a comeback fizzled out in the final minute as a few quick Falcons baskets gave Langara the 73-66 win.
It was a bitter end to the incredible college career of the 2018-19 PACWEST Player of the Year Rachel Beauchamp, but she fittingly earned Player of the Game honours in her final Royals appearance as she posted 26 points and an incredible 22 rebounds.
