A last second block by Carmelle M’Bikata propels the Capilano Blues into the PACWEST gold medal game with a 58-57 victory over the VIU Mariners.
Moments before the block M’Bikata hit a crucial free-throw to break a 57-57 tie and give the Blues the slim lead. Following a Mariner steal they had eight second to rush down the floor before a shot by Shayce Johnston was rejected by M’Bikata.
The Blues offence shot 35.9% from the floor led by the player of the game Emma Cunningham’s 18 points. She also collected six rebounds, four assists and four steals. M’Bikata and Ashley dela Cruz Yip each dropped in 11.
On the other side the Mariners were led by Emily Clarke and her impressive game of 18 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and eight steals. She was named the player of the game. In all the Mariners shot 38% from the field.
The Blues will now face either the Douglas Royals or Camosun Chargers in the gold medal game on Saturday night at 6pm. The Mariners will play for PACWEST bronze at 1:00pm on Saturday.
